Commuter

Norway’s largest commuter network

Urbanisation and increased focus on the environment have resulted in huge growth in the number of journeys in Norway made by train. This figure has increased by an entire 68 % in the past ten years, with 75 million journeys being made by train in Norway in 2014. The increase is largest among the daily commuters in the InterCity triangle (Skien – Lillehammer – Halden – through Oslo), and around 80 % of all train journeys made in Norway are undertaken within these geographical boundaries.

We know that people are spending increasing amounts of time outside their homes, and that people on the move are more receptive to commercial messages than others. Members of the population in the areas surrounding the largest cities are using the train as a method of transport more and more often. We reach these commuters effectively with our faces, often several times a day.

Where people are on the move

JCDecaux is present with 450 faces at 42 of the most highly-trafficked train stations in Norway. Oslo Central Station is the most important hub on the north and south-eastern lines of the InterCity triangle, and with its 910,000 visitors per week is Norway’s most highly-trafficked building. The National Theatre station has over 360,000 visitors per week, and is therefore regarded as the main station on the south-west line.

Insight

A full overview of visits in real time

Never before has JCDecaux been able to document an arena more precisely than we are now able to document Oslo Central Station. Through a collaboration with Cisco, we now count every single smartphone that either connects to or passes Meraki transmitters strategically positioned on the ceiling of the station. The system enables us to see how many people are at the station at any given time, which in turn enables the more refined sale and purchase of the channel.
